In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
From the research I did I found out the main points that people looked for when viewing a music video and what they liked about them in general. I used these points when planning my music video to make sure that it would be what my target audience wanted. There were certain conventions that became apparent when analysing videos that I made sure to mention and include in my planning and video, such as using a song from a popular band and having a narrative story line which has been a main form of music video for many years. There are certain things that music videos need to be successful within the industry, like a strong narrative or entertainment value, like a performance video. These are slightly more important as the artist becomes more widely known as they are known a lot by the videos they make as well as the songs they release. My design for my digipak matches the poster design, this is
How effective is the combination of your main product and your ancillary texts?
The combination of both music video and ancillary texts, namely a CD/DVD digipak and a magazine poster, works out to be very effective. The video by itself is more aimed towards audience feedback and reaction as well as the magazine poster which will most probably be the least successful of the three items. The video is the most important part of gaining an audience for an artist/band, the video gains plays on television as well as online and this attracts new audience members as people are more likely to watch it if it comes on after a song by a band they already like than if they come across the link on a website such as YouTube, especially if it’s a new artist/band. If it’s an already popular band they will already have an existing audience as well as a reputation to uphold. This is why I chose to use a song by the already popular Paramore, the video would be a lot more circulated than if I had used a lesser known band. The CD/DVD digipak would be popular within my target audience but maybe not so much with new fans, this would mean that added extras such as posters or extra DVD features including the video itself would help it to sell as the buyer feels they are getting more from the band for their money.
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Within the media, doing research and the audience feedback gained is one of the most important parts, doing this myself allowed me to find out what my target audience would be looking for and helped me to make my video using successful methods. It also helped me when making a decision about what song to use, as many of the precipitants of the questionnaire were my target audience it made their opinion more influential. The style of video was also based on what was popular with other people as well as what was accessible to me when filming; luckily a majority of the people questioned wanted a narrative video as opposed to a performance video.
How did you use new technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
During the course of my project I encountered technologies that I hadn’t used before, such as Adobe premier which I used to edit my video and websites such as freeonlinesurveys.com and dailymotion.com. I also used technologies that I was already familiar with, such as blogger and movie maker. The main problem I encountered was the format the video was saved in, as it was made on Adobe Premier it saved in the default and only format available, this didn’t allow me to upload my video to sites like YouTube or my blog. To solve this problem I had do use a converting program to change the format of the file. I was then able to upload my video onto daily motion, another site like YouTube which allowed me to share my video with a wide range of people. The video itself was then converted into a FLV file which allowed me to upload it straight onto my blog.
